How Does the New Cadillac Lyric at Walnut Creek Cadillac Drive?

Driving modes in the Cadillac LYRIQ do not change the size of the battery or the EPA-estimated range on the window sticker. They change how the vehicle uses the energy it already has: accelerator response, steering effort, and on all-wheel-drive versions, how torque is split between the front and rear motors. Range moves because driving behavior moves with the mode.

The bigger lever sits in a separate menu: the regenerative braking settings.

What each drive mode actually changes

  • Tour — the default. Lighter steering effort and a gentler accelerator map, the most efficient combination for ordinary driving.
  • Sport — sharper accelerator response, heavier steering, and a more rear-biased torque split on AWD configurations. The mode itself doesn’t drain the battery. The driving it invites does.
  • Snow/Ice — softens throttle input to limit wheel slip on low-traction surfaces.
  • My Mode — a custom combination of steering, accelerator, and, where equipped, suspension settings.

LYRIQ-V configurations add a V-Mode and a Velocity Max function, which prioritize output over efficiency by design.

None of these reach into the battery management system to ration capacity. A LYRIQ in Sport has the same kilowatt-hours available as the same vehicle in Tour. What differs is the pedal calibration, and that determines how much energy leaves the pack in the first ten seconds of a green light.

Regenerative braking is where energy comes back

Two controls do the heavy lifting. Regen on Demand is the paddle behind the steering wheel: pull it and the LYRIQ slows while routing energy back into the battery, without the brake pedal. One-Pedal Driving sets how firmly the vehicle slows the moment you lift off the accelerator, with off, on, and high settings.

These settings persist independently of drive mode, which is the part most drivers miss. Switching to Sport does not disable one-pedal behavior, and switching back to Tour does not turn it on. They’re two separate systems, and the regen side is the one with a measurable effect on how far a charge goes.

Congested driving is where the difference shows. Someone running One-Pedal on High through stop-and-go surface streets recovers energy at every deceleration that would otherwise leave as brake heat. A long run down I-680 at speed gives it far less to capture — the same driver crossing between East Bay cities on surface streets will see it work constantly.

What moves range more than mode selection

Sustained highway speed is the largest single factor. Aerodynamic drag climbs steeply with speed and no drive mode offsets it.

Cabin heating and cooling draw straight from the battery rather than from waste engine heat, so climate control carries an energy cost in an EV that it doesn’t in a gas vehicle. Preconditioning while the LYRIQ is still plugged in shifts that load onto the charger and preserves range otherwise spent in the first few miles.

Charging habits matter too. Routine charging to a lower ceiling, then topping up ahead of longer trips, is the pattern Cadillac’s guidance points toward.

Range Estimates

The range estimate on the display is not a fixed calculation. It adapts to recent driving history, so a stretch of hard acceleration pulls the projection down and steady driving with regen active brings it back up. An estimate that shifts after a mode change is the vehicle recalculating from how it’s being driven, not reporting a change in capacity.

Trim and drivetrain set the baseline underneath all of it. Rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations carry different EPA-estimated figures, listed by configuration on the Cadillac LYRIQ model page. Charging specifics are covered in the guide to charging your LYRIQ.

Try it on your own route

Range behavior reads better from the driver’s seat than from a spec sheet. Schedule a LYRIQ test drive and run it on the route you commute — switch between Tour and Sport, try One-Pedal on High in traffic, and watch the energy display respond. Our Cadillac Crest Club–recognized product specialists can cover home charging setup as well.
